Finding Caregiver Support
Caregiver support is very often overlooked because the main focus tends to be on the aging parents. However, what many people do not realize is that the caregiver’s job can be very stressful and if there is no support given to them, they may be burned out very quickly.
No doubt a caregiver will feel a tremendous sense of achievement by being able to provide the necessary care to his or her aging parents, this task can also bring on a lot of worry and anxiety. Besides having to take care of the old folks, there are also the children to care for, a job to attend to and possibly a lot of traveling involved. The physical and emotional strain can have an adverse effect on the caregiver if support is not rendered in time. It is not uncommon to hear of caregivers suffering from depressions after a period of time.
As such, in what ways can caregiver support help?
1. A professional assistance may be hired to relief the caregivers of constant stress. Even if the assistance cannot be there all the time, a few hours will still make a lot of difference to the caregiver who can then take a break or run some personal errands.
2. If money is an issue, then get a family member to stand in occasionally to relief the caregiver of the stress.
3. Support for the caregiver can also be in the form of providing relevant information with regards to the aging parents’ health conditions. In this way, the caregiver will know what to expect and not be caught by surprise.
4. Allowing the caregiver to take a short break is also a form of support. Arrange for a family member or a professional caregiver to take over for a few days.
Finding the necessary caregiver support is vital if you want the caregiver to remain sane. Besides health professional, there are also volunteers or social workers whom you can turn to for help but what is most important is to look out for signs of depression or burn outs in the caregivers and get help before it is too late.
