Senior Health
Senior health is a very important issue to worry about if you have aging parents at home. Old folks who are healthy and independent will be able to handles a lot of things on their own and you will less to be concerned about. On the other hand, for those with sickly or immobile elderly parents, extra care will have to be exercised and it will be more stressful for the caregivers. Thus, how can you keep your aging parents in great health?
1. Regular exercises
Encouraging your elderly parents to carry out regular exercises is very important to ensure good physical health. Of course, we are not talking about vigorous exercises here! Old folks can get involved in simple forms of exercises such as walking, swimming and stretching.
Walking exercises are good as it helps to burn fat as well as calories. It can also help to improve the cardiovascular health. Get your elderly parents to take a short walk everyday or even twice or thrice a day. It does not have to be a very long walk of some hours; just half an hour each day will do wonders.
Swimming is good but definitely not for long laps. Just short and relaxing swimming sessions will do as your goal is to improve you aging parents’. Senior health is important but caregivers must also exercise cautions to prevent any unnecessary accidents.
As one grows older, he will start to lose flexibility so one of the things you should get your aging parents to do is simple stretching exercises. Nothing vigorous should be introduced; just simple stretching exercises, such as low stress yoga, to improve the flexibility in these elder parents.
2. Communication with others
Another way to keep the old folks healthy is to encourage their communication with others. Dissuade them from spending too much time alone at home or in front of the television. In the long run, that is not going to benefit the old folks as the human minds are not exercised and their minds will start to deteriorate. Over time, other health problems may set in, such as dementia, and that will just add on to the stress of the caregivers.
As such, maintaining senior health is vital not just for the old folks themselves but to the caregivers too.
